2018 S.C Pannell TEMPRANILLO BLEND MacLaren Vale, South Australia
Made by Steve Pannell in McLaren Vale, South Australia. Steve’s winemaking prowess over the years has cemented his reputation as a gun winemaker grown every year. He honed his craft working in the finest vineyards in Burgundy (Comtes Lafon), Bordeaux(Mouton Rotschild) and Italy’s Barolo (G.D. Vajra). This specific wine is Spanish/Portuguese-inspired yet definitely Australian, and it represents Steve's idea that wine should complement our climate and culture, not work against it.
Full-bodied, plenty of dark fruits (blackcurrants / blueberries), dark cherry and chocolate with sweet spice, terracotta, freshly laid turf, chinotto, rosemary flowers and rhubarb. It's a powerful and complex nose backed up by a flavourful palate. This 2018 is medium-bodied and flavourful. It has a clean, seamless entry and is strangely thirst quenching. The tannins are entwined with the acidity and balanced with the mouthful of fruit and spice. The mid-palate is sweet and fleshy but held in check by the tannins and the finish is insanely long. Food matching ideas: aged black Angus T-Bone with peppercorn sauce, venison with dark cherries sauce and jerusalem artichoke.
