2018 Domaine Cauhape ‘Chant des Vignes’ GROS MANSENG BLEND Jurancon
Domaine Cauhape is located in the South of France, not far from Pau and the mountains of the Pyrenees. The owner and winemaker Henri Ramoteau is a rising star of the wine world. Beginning on a parcel of just one hectare, it has grown to 47 hectares and become the most renowned producer of Jurançon wines. Henri produces beautiful and aromatic dry whites along with complex sweet wines. This particular wine is a blend of grapes from the Jurancon, 60% Gros Manseng and 40% Camaralet, crushed and destemmed then macerated on skins for 12 hours before pressing. It is then cool-fermented in stainless steel and matured on lees for 5 months.
Gros Manseng is a perfect grape to produce late harvest sweet wines, so when it is picked early in a good vintage the wine exhibits an intense bouquet, with notes of citrus and exotic fruits (even pineapple!) along with hints of white pepper and cinnamon from the Camaralet. This aromatic register is amplified in the mouth, where there is lovely volume and texture, finishing long and refreshing with crisp acidity. A real discovery!
