2013 Les Obriers de la Peira GRENACHE BLEND Terrasses du Larzac
La Pèira is a small 11.4 hectare domaine located in the well drained limestone gravels of Les Terrasses du Larzac in Languedoc. The domaine is owned by expatriate Australian composer Rob Dougan and his French-Mauritian wife Karine Ahton. These were the last wines made by winemaker Jeremie Depierre before he left the vineyard in 2014. Only estate-grown fruit from 20 to 40 year old vines is used. Intensive work is done in the vineyards and the soil is worked manually to produce tiny yields (8-20hl/ha depending on the wine and vintage). Quantities of all wines here are by definition very limited with just 300 cases produced of the Grand Vin. For this specific wine made in 2013 the blend is Cinsault (70% and Carignan 30%).
The grapes are hand-harvested and de-stemmed and naturally yeast fermented in tanks before ageing in large oak vats for 14 months. The wine exhibits beautiful leather and cacao notes followed by dark red fruits. There is incredible concentration in the wine yet such finesse on the palate, with Cinsault and Carignan nicely complementing each other here. The wine is almost ten years of age and drinks like a charm right now. Nothing like an aged red with which to finish a tasting!
